Percy Harold Millard was born in Bottisham in 1896 (Newmarket Q1-1896 3B:500), son of Saunders and Charlotte MILLARD (née MARSH).
1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Town Street, Bottisham, with his grandparents , James MILLARD [61] farm labourer born Lode and Sarah [55] born Lode and his sister Olive [4] born Bottisham. His parents were at Elfleda Lodge, Newmarket Road, Fen Ditton, father Saunders MILLARD [31] gardener, mother Charlotte [31] and brother Charles Edward [2]. All three were born in Bottisham. 1911 census...Aged 15, farm labourer, he was at The Green,Reach, with his parents and brother Charles Edward and sisters Maggie Oswath [9] born Fen Ditton and Violet Snowdrop [4] born Reach. His connection with Burwell will be the historical connection of Reach with Burwell and Swaffham Prior. |
He enlisted in Cambridge.
Since he died at a General Hospital and his Army records have not been found, there is no way of telling where and when he was wounded. Being in a base hospital indicates a serious wound and a couple of days at least away from the fighting. The 11th Suffolk had been in the trenches in the Albert- Ovillers area until 8th July, in fact they were heavily involved right from the start of the Battle of the Somme on July 1st.
